Shorties

Withered leaves still cling
To what remains of autumn's
Stark forked branches

**********************************

Winter afternoon
Memories move like shadows
Beneath a blind wet sun

**********************************

Old coyote moon
Pure light yellows the clear night
Soft as ancient bones

**********************************

Stately pelicans
Glide over tumbling surf
Ocean's lullaby

**********************************

Pale sun on wet sand
Chilly wind whistling in
Pelicans align

**********************************

Pelicans fishing
Grandfathers of the ocean
Harvesting the foam

**********************************

Butterfly stories
A thousand orange wings sing
Songs of wood and stone

**********************************
Nadir of the night
Hoot of a hidden owl
Transfiguration

**********************************

Geese heard but not seen
Wings above our fragile world
Soon they will return

**********************************

Sunshine on bare stone
Where the young river begins
Immortality

Winter mountain winds
Howl through a deserted house
I am an orphan now

**********************************

Empty moon singing
In a manzanita sky
Owls harmonize

**********************************

Buds on a bare tree
January's messengers
From another May

**********************************

Sierra sunset
The music of forever
Stuns our lowland ears

**********************************

Dark sun down early
Streetlights in the soft wet night
One black cat crouches

**********************************

Dark and silent lake
Sorrowful traveler stops
One star reflected

**********************************

Bitter opium
Green pods scream in agony
Sliced open for dope

**********************************

Cat's in from the rain
Ten pounds of gray grinning fluff
Two pounds of water

**********************************

Soft winds blowing through
A tearful heart's sweet memories
The kindness of time

Shooting star arcs down
Burning the bottomless blue
Hope waits on the shore

*********************************

Resurrected in a cloud
Mother's tired old face
Smiling sad and proud

**********************************

Owl in the moon
Yellow slit eyes bent brown beak
Do you see the tears?

**********************************

Old calico cat
Blinks her eyes, licks her whiskers
Lies down for a nap

**********************************

Solitary eye
Yellow as an old dog's tooth
Peeks over the hill

**********************************

Broken stone lion
Guards an abandoned garden
Sea salt in his eyes

**********************************

Yellow leaves-cold sky
Rustle of a small brown bird
Beneath my window

**********************************

This day fades away
Twilight twirls her pink silk skirt
Darkness moves like smoke

**********************************

On the horizon
One slow yellow eye winks shut
A new night sets sail
